Robert Lee Knight, 70, answered the Master’s call peacefully on Monday, May 9, 2011 at Sentara Careplex Hospital in Hampton, VA. Mr. Knight was born on February 15, 1940, in Rocky Mount, NC to the late Ernest and Lucile Knight. Mr. Knight retired from Newport News Shipyard after 32 years of service. He was a member of Church of Jesus.

 Mr. Knight was predeceased by one son, Ernest Knight. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Mary Knight; four children, Robert Knight Jr., Frances Hill, Gladys Knight, and Audrey Ramirez; one sister, Geraldine Knight; three brothers, Johnny B., David and George Knight; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren including a special great-grandchild Cameran Turner that was born on Mr. Knight’s birthday.

Bennie Lee Jr., also known as “June” was born in Chesapeake, Virginia to the late Bennie and Birdie Lee on March 16, 1933.

He was a graduate of George Washington Carver High School, Chesapeake, Va. He served in the U.S. Army, worked at the Caulk Plant for a number of years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, West Munden and was a lover of gospel music.

Our loved one was called from labor to reward on Sunday May 8. 2011. He was predeceased by one sister Aileen Lee.

He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Marion Brown and Birdie Lee; a brother Pernell Lee (Victoria); nephews John Brown, Ray Brown, Michael Brown, Pernell Lee Jr.; nieces Lynda Carroll (Leon), Victoria Piersol (Kim) and Rita Lee; two aunts Rosetta Moseley and Doris L. Williams; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Charles Walston Jr., 69, passed away May 6, 2011 at home. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Walston Sr. and Geneva Walston Heath. Charles retired as a Truck Driver from EV Williams. 

He is survived by his wife, Addie Mae Walston; three sisters, Selma Goodman (William), Thelma Mullen, and Minnie Johnson Edwin; and a host of other relatives and friends.

James Edward Copeland Sr., 89, departed this life, May 6, 2011, at Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, NC. James Sr. was born May 24, 1921 to Joseph and Mary L. Copeland in Nansemond County, VA.  

He was an ordained Deacon and served for many years at both Zion Christian Church and Laurel Hill United Church of Christ.  For over twenty years, Deacon Copeland served as President of the Sunday School Union.

 He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mrs. Lula Mae (Rawles) Copeland; three sons, James Jr. (Thelma D.), Jeff (Barbara), Joseph A. (Marchelle); two sisters, Mrs. Katie Knight and Mrs. Hilda Abram; one brother, Enoch Copeland (Jean); five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Clarine R. Jones (D. Nelson), Mrs. Merriam Osborne (Herman), Mr. Roland Rawles (Rosia) Mrs. Myrtle Rawles, Mr. Benjamin Holland and Mrs. Gloria R. Copeland of Jersey City, NJ.

James White

James White

James White, (Trigger/ Fine All the Time), 83, of the 2400 block of Cottage Ave. passed away May 5, 2011 at Sentara Leigh Hospital.  He was born Sept. 3, 1927 to the late Louise White in Norfolk, VA.  James retired from Virginia Carolina Electric after 30 years of service.  He was predeceased by three sons, Raymond Albert White, James White Jr. and Alvin Lee White.

He is survived by one daughter, Valicia Hunt (Eric) of Murfreesboro, TN; two stepdaughters, Karen Ore (James) and Denise Boney both of Norfolk; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; devoted friend, Helen Davenport; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Sydney E. Perry, Jr.

Sydney E. Perry Jr.

On Sunday, May 1, 2011 Sydney Edward Perry, Jr. put on immortality.  He was born on November 24, 1939 to the late Sydney Edward Perry, Sr. and Beatrice Mae (Drew) Perry in Portsmouth, Virginia. Educated in the public school system in Portsmouth, VA, Sydney Jr. was a graduate of I.C. Norcom High School, home of the mighty “Greyhounds”.  Sydney Jr. was formally educated at University of Maryland, College Park, Bachelor of Science [Criminal Justice/Political Science]; Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA, Masters of Urban Studies [Criminal Justice/Social Research]; and Virginia Union University, Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology, Richmond, VA, Masters of Divinity.
Sydney Jr. retired from the US Air Force in 1978 after 20+ years of service in Law Enforcement. His tenure included Okinawa, The Republic of China, Vietnam, Alaska and other domestic assignments, including serving aboard Air Force One, Andrews Air Force Base. Upon military retirement, he accepted an opportunity in higher education as an Academic Advisor, Instructor, Social Researcher and President of African-American Faculty & Administrators, Old Dominion University (ODU) Norfolk, VA.
Spiritually, Sydney served as an Associate Pastor/Minister of Cary’s Baptist Church, Yorktown, VA functioning as Adult Sunday School Teacher, Director of Vacation Bible School, and fulfilling pastoral duties, which included, but not limited to Preacher, Worship Leader, Preacher, Conducting Communion, Baptism, Funeral and Wedding Official, (1986-2006).
Known as “Honey” lovingly to his wife, “Daddy,” to his daughters,  “Daddy Sydney,” to his grandchildren,  “Sydney Edward,” to his siblings and family, “Uncle Sydney,” to a host of nieces and nephews, and “Syd” or “Mr. Perry,” to many who adored him.  He worshipped the Lord, wherein he touched the hearts of all who knew him and gave sacrificially to both family and friends. The Lord always first, his greatest joy and treasure was loving and nurturing his family richly. He enjoyed preaching the Word of God, in addition to reading, writing, mentoring, educating, music and traveling.
Sydney Edward Perry Jr. watches and awaits in eternity over his loved ones; his devoted and loving wife Novella R. Perry of 48 years; three daughters, Deborah Perry McCalla, Simone Perry-Brackens, Makeda Perry-Richardson; seven grandchildren, Meshai, Sydney, Jaquas, Micah, Clarissa, Blesyn and Faith; and two great grandsons, Zachariah and Baby Boy Olivares (due June 2011); one brother, Joseph; five sisters, Phyllis, Joyce, Erma, Norma Rae and Selma; father-in-law, Ernest Lee Richardson; mother-in-law, Thelma Richardson; step-mother-in-law, Arnie Richardson; and five in-laws, Velma, Lue Ella, Ernest Lee, Jr., Francis and Andrea. Sydney Jr. is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews and many cousins and friends who knew him as their uncle, cousin and confidant, but saw him as their Father.
Sydney E. Perry, Jr. was blessed with a rich and happy life, filled with an abundance of love. He will always be greatly missed.

Theresa “Bea” Biggs Robertson, 52, of the 2200 block of Lloyd Dr. passed away May 4, 2011.  She was born December 18, 1958 to the late Clara B. and Walter H. Biggs in Norfolk, VA.

Theresa was a graduate of the Norfolk Public School system and attended Norfolk State University.  She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.  She was employed for 15 years with the Navy Exchange Service Command.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and Benjamin Biggs and two sisters, Evelyn B. Thomas and Mamie R. Biggs.

She is survived by one son, Tremayne D. Robertson; three sisters, Patsy J. Hamilton (Deamus) of San Diego, CA, Deborah B. Vaughan of Chesapeake and Bonnie B. Smithers (Donald) of Virginia Beach; one brother, Thurman Biggs of Norfolk; goddaughters, Nyah Collier and Destiny Faulk; and a host of other relatives and friends.
