Carolyn Francis Kelly McLean, affectionately known as “Cal” was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 29, 2011.  She made her transition at her residence at the age of 62.  She was a native of Norfolk, VA.  Carolyn was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Doris F. Kelly Sr.

She was a devoted Christian and faithful member of First Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk.  Carolyn touched many lives and brightened them all.  She will be missed by many. 

She is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Johnnie L. McLean of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Robert A. Mays Jr. (Angie) and Cameron D. Mays of Las Vegas, NV; three daughters, Robin A. Mays of Fredericksburg, Carolyn D. Goodman of Woodbridge and Johnetta L. Mendez of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Barbara A. Kelly, Regina Kelly Ridley and Linda Kelly Baum; two brothers, Louis F. Kelly Jr. and Rev. Michael E. Kelly (Sharon); special brother-in-law, Wallace Baum all of Virginia Beach; 7 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Claudia Mae Platt

Claudia Mae Platt, 93, of the 800 block of Pine Harbor Dr. passed away April 28, 2011 at Sentara Leigh Hospital.  She was born June 21, 1917 to the late Betty Litchfield and Andrew Copeland in South Hill, VA. 

She was a retired florist and a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Norfolk.  She was predeceased by her husband, Gus Platt, Jr.; sons, Juadel Copeland, Tex Copeland and Milton Baker Jr.; daughter, Juanita Platt-Allen and a brother, Nathaniel Copeland.

She is survived by three daughters, Doris King, Marie Burney, Daphen McCullough (Ernest); one son, Reginald Platt; one sister-in-law, Elsie Copeland; 24 grandchildren; 61 great grandchildren; 31 great great grandchildren; 3 great-great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Nathan A. Smallwood Sr.

Nathan A. Smallwood, Sr.

Nathan “Nate” Anthony Smallwood, Sr., 53, of the 2300 block of Hanson Ave. was called home to glory on April 25, 2011.  He was born March 24, 1958 and raised in Norfolk, VA.  He was predeceased by his father Nathaniel “Nat” Smallwood Jr. and brother Sylvester Scott. 

He was a member of Jesus Christ House of Worship and was faithful under the leadership of Pastor Ruth Flemming.  He loved his community and worked hard at keeping it together.  Nathan attended Booker T. Washington High School where he was a faithful member of the band, “The Bookers” and mastered the bass drum.  He was very popular and friendly with everyone he came in contact with. He later attended Tidewater Community College where he successfully achieved his Contractor’s Class (A) License.  General contracting and construction was truly his gift and passion which led him to start his own business, Smallwood Home Repair & Realty. His motto was, ‘Nate Does It All’.

He is survived by his wife Pearly M. Smallwood; his mother, Lucille M. Smallwood; loving mother-in-law, Pearl Byrd; five sisters, Linda Bolden (Bobby), Brenda Williams (Willie), Betty Hanbury (Hugh), Gloria Gray (Wayne) and Alice Blowe (Bernard); three brothers, John Scott (Laverne), Jeffrey Smallwood (Yvonne) and Michael Smallwood (Tanya); four daughters, Shaleta Kerns (Manuel), Shawanda Taylor (Leshawn), LaTarsha Smallwood (Bristol), Shaniece Smallwood; two sons, Antoine Darden and Nathan Smallwood Jr.; eight grandchildren, Terrel and MaKaia Kerns, Langston, Christina, JohNathan, Christian Taylor, Leland and Laila Rollins.

Glenn A. Penerton was born to Darnell and Dorothy Penerton on April 23, 1960.  He departed this life on March 5, 2011.

Glenn was a very smart young man.  He loved painting, fishing and electronics.  He was a quiet person and did not hang in the streets.  He wanted the best of everything.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his father, Darnell Penerton; his mother, Dorothy Penerton; sisters, Thalia Regenia Penerton and Kimberly Norvell; nephew, Marquell Penerton; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

James L. Self

James “Pop” Leroy Self, 83, a longtime resident of Virginia, passed away April 22, 2011.  A native of Hemingway, SC, he was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Cathleen Self, one son, Michael, three sisters and one brother.  He retired from Local 891 after 50+ years as a cement mason.  “Pop’s” life was devoted to being an incredible husband, father, grandfather and friend.  He will be greatly missed.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 56 years, Frances; daughters, Jacqueline Royster and Michelle Brooks (Terry); sons, Wayne, Jeffrey, Reginald, Terry (Deborah) and Gerry; six sisters, five brothers, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
