Herman Lee Curtis, Jr., 60, of the 8600 block of Morwin St. passed away April 12, 2011 at his home.  He was born Dec. 14, 1950 to the late Lula Matthews Curtis and Herman Curtis Sr. in Mobile, AL. 

He retired as a merchant seaman after 20 years of service and was employed for 3 years with McAllister. 

He is survived by his wife, Brenda A. Curtis; four daughters; seven sons; four sisters; mother-in-law.

Mary A. Jenkins, 57, of the 2300 block of Lansing Ave. passed away April 9, 2011.   Mary was a member of Holy Light Church of Deliverance, Portsmouth.  She was employed with Virginia Public School system.

She is survived by her husband, John H. Jenkins; two daughters, Evangelist Katrice Allen and Keisha Kelly; one son, John Jenkins Jr.; one sister; three brothers; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two aunts; one uncle; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Annette Marie Corprew, 51, of Alexandria, VA died Tuesday, April 12, 2011 in a local hospital. A native of Chesapeake, she was a 1978 honor graduate of Deep Creek High School.  She was predeceased by her father Ossia S. Corprew, Sr.

Annette was truly noted for her caring nature and infectious personality. Whatever she did, she had purpose and loved inspiring others to do well.  With those qualities, she became an entrepreneur. She received her bachelors of science degree in Office Management with a concentration in Office Administration (Cum Laude) from Virginia State University; her master’s in Managerial Leadership (Cum Laude) from National-Louis University, School of Management, McLean, VA . She was employed as a Human Resource/Financial Analyst by Harvest Life Changers Church, International in Woodbridge, VA. She was a member of Love of Christ Church in Alexandria, VA where she served as the Executive Secretary for twenty-five years.

To cherish her memory, she leaves her mother, Annie D. Corprew; four brothers Peter T. Corprew (Beatrice); Robert L. Corprew; Ossia S. Corprew, Jr. (Shawan) and Maurice Corprew (Brenda); five sisters, Brenda Berkitt (Jude), Theresa Corprew, (her twin), Jeanette Cox (Bernard), Patricia Corprew McFarland (Leemar) and Dr. Angela L. Corprew-Boyd; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Nedra Pannell Luster, 70, of the 2800 block of Tait Terrace died Saturday, April 9, 2011.  A native of Roanoke, VA, she was the daughter of the late William and Nancy Pannell.  She was a member of New Mt. Zion Church of God Holiness in Norfolk.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard N. Luster; daughter, Michelle L. Lancaster (Gaynor); two sons, Charles Luster and David Luster; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Eulalia (Tina) Foster and Delphine Coles; one sister-in-law, Cassandra B. Person; one brother-in-law, Melvin Brown.

Dr. Brinston B. Collins

Dr. Brinston B. Collins

Dr. Brinston B. Collins of the 2000 block of Augusta Ct. entered into eternal rest on April 7, 2011. A native of Belhaven, North Carolina, his family moved to Norfolk.  He was born to the late Roxanna C. Collins and Cornelious Collins and was reared by Mack James and Roxanna James.

A product of the Norfolk Public School System, Dr. Collins graduated from Morehouse College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.  He studied at the American University of Beirut which awarded him a Masters degree in Arabic Studies.  He was granted the Doctorate of Philosophy in Middle Eastern Studies from Princeton University.

Dr. Collins taught at the Elizabeth City College (University) and Norfolk State University.  His longest tenure was at Norfolk State. 

He is survived by his devoted wife Betty Jefferson Collins; two children, daughter, Cheri K. Mallory (W. Lance) of Washington, DC; son, Master Sergeant Brinston B. Collins, Jr. (Tonia) of Fort Eustis Virginia; grandchildren, Warren Mallory, Kayla Mallory, and Brinston B. Collins, III; sisters, Marion Teasley (Donald), Alfreda James (Christopher Dere), and brothers, Clifton Lovick (Gwendolyn) and Willis James; and numerous cousins, friends, and former students.
